Solstice Jewellery has created a unique handcrafted necklace collection based on ‘Winter Solstice: A Novel’, by Lucy Costigan. The design for each piece is based on the symbolism of the sun entering the cairn at Newgrange at dawn on the Winter Solstice. The sun’s colours create a glittering contrast when placed beside the darkest colours of the spectrum, from jet black to silver grey. The effect created is truly dazzling. This is beautifully portrayed in Lucy’s novel :
It was a festival of sparkles – yellow, orange, red, white, cooper, bronze and gold. Every corner of the chamber now shimmered and sparkled, reflecting the radiance of their golden master.
For our ancestors, Winter Solstice was a time of celebration. It marked the end of the long dark days and heralded the much anticipated rebirth of the sun. At Newgrange, the outer cairn and the basins of the inner chamber are made of quartz. Quartz in its true form is known as rock crystal. Crystals have been used for millennia for their positive energy. When light hits the quartz it splits into the colours of the rainbow, glowing and flashing. Each piece of our jewellery reflects the journey of the sun on the solstice from utter darkness to brilliant light.
Solstice Jewellery has been inspired by the mystery and magnificence of Newgrange on the morning of the Winter Solstice as portrayed in the Lucy Costigan’s timeless novel.
